Spiny Water Fleas Gaining Ground in the Gatineau River

Drazen Seslija

The spiny water flea continues its spread in the Outaouais region. After being detected in the Baskatong Reservoir in 2024, this invasive exotic species was recently observed in the Gatineau River as far downstream as the Chelsea Dam, approximately 170 kilometers from the reservoir.

The discovery was made during monitoring work carried out by teams from the Ministry of the Environment, the Fight Against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks. It has been confirmed that the spiny water fleas are present throughout the Gatineau River.

What is the spiny water flea?

Native to parts of Europe and Asia, the spiny water flea is a small aquatic organism that can easily spread from one body of water to another, particularly by attaching itself to boats and fishing or recreational equipment. Once established in an aquatic environment, it is particularly difficult to eradicate.

Authorities are therefore focusing on prevention to limit its spread to other bodies of water in the region. Boaters and anglers are encouraged to take three simple steps before moving their boats or equipment: clean the equipment, drain all residual water, and allow it to dry completely. These precautions are especially important when travelling between different lakes and waterways in the Outaouais region.

Residents who wish to find a cleaning station can consult the map provided by the Government of Quebec.

Finally, anyone who believes they have seen a spiny water flea is encouraged to report it to authorities. Observations can be reported by email to renseignements.faune@environnement.gouv.qc.ca or by phone at 1-877-346-6763.

Given that the species is now present throughout the Gatineau River, vigilance from waterway users remains essential to prevent it from expanding into new territories.
