Liberals reclaim Gatineau; PQ wins Papineau by a thread
Lily Ryan
Gatineau voters sent three Liberals to Quebec, returning Hull, Pontiac, Chapleau and Gatineau to the party that held them for decades before the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) broke through. Sacha Cannon unseated CAQ incumbent Suzanne Tremblay in Hull, Michel Langevin defeated two-term CAQ MNA Mathieu Lévesque in Chapleau, and David Logue took the Gatineau riding left open with the retirement of CAQ MNA Robert Bussière. Pontiac sent Liberal André Fortin to Quebec for a fourth time.
In Papineau, Parti Québécois (PQ) candidate Isabelle Millette edged out Liberal Isabelle Sabourin by 554 votes. She becomes the first PQ member elected in the Outaouais in 50 years and the first woman to represent Papineau.
Vote counting in all four ridings was enough to call the seats, although final tallies will be confirmed after the newspaper is printed. At press time, the party that will govern Quebec could not be reliably called, and whether the PQ will form a minority government is not known.
